When investigating what the market should be for the site in Phoenix, Arizona, it was imperative to emphasize the importance of place. After researching through many resources, I uncovered a plethora of conceptual aspects as programmatic drivers of design. With Phoenix, Arizona’s history of establishment as an agricultural community, it is imperative that the history stays intact in the future of its design. Important drivers I discovered for the program and design of this adaptive reuse project are Phoenix’s food identity, neighborhood connectivity, comfortability, the movement as people, light and open-air spaces, and connectivity to health and wellness. Other important concepts are food as the art, the celebration of structure, and biophilic design.

I hope to emphasize the importance of place and space in my concept design for the market. Public markets create inclusivity within communities. I believe the importance of neighborhood connectivity is a universal concept we should carry throughout our careers, not just within the public market model. There is an extreme importance of sustainability and the role it plays in the creation of the future. Public markets should be both affordable and accessible social hubs that bind communities together.
